Devote Ox

Layer 1 · Habitat: Resting Place

A stone ox lying in a shrine like a carved statue, its joints sealed with gold alloy.

Description

A stone ox built by the Keepers, larger than any living ox, lying in a shrine like a carved statue. Its joints are sealed with seams of gold alloy that glow faintly when it moves. It is adorned as a shrine itself: bowls of spoiled food, burnt-down candles and incense lie at its feet. It has guarded its shrine since the Keepers left, and it rises when anyone disturbs it or takes an offering. A successful DC 14 Intelligence (Nature) check reveals it is no creature of nature, but something made.

Traits

False Appearance. While motionless, the ox is indistinguishable from a carved stone statue, except to a creature that succeeds on the Nature check above.

Shrine Guardian. The ox wakes when a creature damages its shrine or takes an offering from it. It pursues that creature until the offering is returned or the creature leaves the area of the shrine (about 300 feet), then returns to its place and lies down.

Charge. If the ox moves at least 20 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a Gore attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 9 (2d8) Piercing damage and must succeed on a DC 15 Strength saving throw or have the Prone condition.

Actions

Multiattack. The ox makes two Gore attacks.

Gore. Melee Attack Roll: +7, reach 5 ft. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) Piercing damage.

Bonus Actions

Trample. Melee Attack Roll: +7, reach 5 ft., one creature that has the Prone condition. Hit: 12 (2d6 + 5) Bludgeoning damage.
