Penitent

Layer 1 · Habitat: Congregation

A kneeling Keeper of stone, head bowed, identical to the real ones

Description

A kneeling Keeper of dark stone, head bowed, hands pressed together, dust on its shoulders: identical to the thousands of real ones around it. It is not stone. It is a creature that has taken their shape, and it waits among them in perfect stillness. Silence keeps it asleep. Sound wakes it, and the grinding of its first movement wakes the ones beside it.

Traits

False Appearance. While motionless, the penitent is indistinguishable from a kneeling stone Keeper. A creature that touches it feels that it is faintly warm.

Woken by Sound. The penitent stays dormant, with the Incapacitated condition, until a sound louder than a whisper is made within 30 feet of it. Magical silence, such as the Silence spell, keeps it dormant.

Chain Waking. The grinding of a penitent's movement counts as a sound. At the end of each of its turns, every dormant penitent within 30 feet of it wakes.

Kneel Again. After 1 minute without sound, the penitent kneels where it stands and becomes dormant again. It never leaves the platform.

Actions

Multiattack. The penitent makes two Stone Fist attacks. It can replace one of them with Silencing Grasp.

Stone Fist. Melee Attack Roll: +5, reach 5 ft. Hit: 8 (1d10 + 3) Bludgeoning damage.

Silencing Grasp. Melee Attack Roll: +5, reach 5 ft. Hit: The target has the Grappled condition (escape DC 13), and while grappled, the penitent's hand covers its mouth: the target can't speak or cast spells with a Verbal component.
