Drill Centipede

Layer 1 · Habitat: Hanging Terraces

A centipede 2 to 3 meters long whose head is a spiraling drill

Description

A centipede 2 to 3 meters long, plated in dull grey chitin. Its head is a spiraling drill that actually turns, screwing it down through earth and soft stone. It waits underground, feeling for footsteps, then bursts up beneath its prey. Some hunt alone; others hunt in packs, and the ground around them is riddled with holes.

Traits

Tunneler. The centipede can burrow through earth and soft stone, leaving a 5-foot-diameter tunnel behind it.

Eruption. If the centipede bursts out of the ground and attacks on the same turn, it has Advantage on its first attack roll, and a creature it hits with that attack has the Prone condition.

Actions

Multiattack. The centipede makes one Drill attack and one Bite attack.

Drill. Melee Attack Roll: +5, reach 10 ft. Hit: 12 (2d8 + 3) Piercing damage. The attack deals double damage to objects and structures.

Bite. Melee Attack Roll: +5, reach 5 ft. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) Piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) Poison damage, and the target must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or have the Poisoned condition until the end of its next turn.

Bonus Actions

Dig In. If the centipede is on earth or soft stone, it burrows up to half its Burrow Speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks.
